🇮🇩 Flores Travel Guide 🏝️ 18 Top Spots 📍 Local Experts 2026 Edition

Things to Do in Flores Indonesia — The Local's Guide to 18 Best Places (2026)

Flores is one of Indonesia's most underrated islands — wild, raw, and 100x quieter than Bali. After living and running our dive resort here since 2014, we wrote this guide to share the places that genuinely matter. From Komodo dragons to Kelimutu's tri-colored crater lakes, from traditional Wae Rebo villages to world-class diving in Komodo National Park — here's everything worth your time on Flores.

🤿 If diving is your priority: you'll spend most time around Labuan Bajo (West Flores). If you want the full island — culture, volcanoes, traditional villages — plan 10-14 days because road travel between regions is long.

Flores at a Glance — The 4 Reasons to Come

Table of Contents — All 18 Places

1. Komodo National Park — Dragons, Pink Beach & Padar 🦎

Padar Island viewpoint Komodo National Park Indonesia

Komodo National Park is the reason most travelers come to Flores in the first place — and rightly so. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering Komodo Island, Rinca Island, Padar Island, and 26 smaller islets. The park hosts the last wild population of Komodo dragons (about 5,700 individuals split between Komodo and Rinca) and protects some of the most biodiverse marine waters on the planet.

Most visitors do a 1-day or 3D2N tour from Labuan Bajo combining: Komodo or Rinca trek (we recommend Rinca — more dragons per square km, less crowded), Padar Island viewpoint (the iconic three-bay panorama), Pink Beach (one of only seven pink-sand beaches in the world), and snorkeling at Taka Makassar or Manta Point if conditions permit.

Practical info you actually need

  • Park fees: payable on arrival in IDR cash, approximately 280,000 IDR per person per day. Full fee breakdown.
  • Best time: April–November for diving and Padar trek. December–March for fewer crowds and manta season. Seasonal guide.
  • How to get there: Fly to Komodo Airport (LBJ), then boat. Access guide.
  • Guide: mandatory for dragon treks. Diving requires licensed PADI center.

2. Kelimutu Volcano — Three Crater Lakes That Change Color 🌋

Kelimutu Volcano three colored crater lakes sunrise Flores

Kelimutu is the geological showstopper of Flores. A 1,640m volcano in central Flores with three crater lakes side by side, each a completely different color — and the colors change unpredictably over years due to dissolved minerals and microbial activity reacting with volcanic gases. Currently: turquoise, dark blue, and olive green, but they've cycled through black, red, brown and emerald over the decades.

The hike is short (30 minutes from the car park) but you need to start at 4am to catch sunrise — that's when the light hits the lakes and the colors pop. Cloud cover blows in fast after sunrise so timing is everything.

Local logistics

  • Base town: Moni village (the gateway to Kelimutu). Stay overnight there, leave at 4am.
  • From Labuan Bajo: 11–12h drive or quick 1h flight via Maumere (MOF). Most travelers fly.
  • Best months: May to October for clearest skies. December–March often clouded over.
  • Entry fee: ~150,000 IDR for foreigners (subject to change).
  • Photographer tip: arrive 30 min before sunrise to set up. Bring a tripod and a warm layer.

3. Diving Komodo — Mantas, Sharks, World-Class Reefs 🐠

Manta ray Manta Point Komodo National Park

This is our home turf. We've been diving Komodo daily since 2014 and we'll tell you straight: it's one of the top 5 dive destinations on the planet. Strong currents bring nutrient-rich water that supports an extraordinary biomass — mantas at Manta Point and Karang Makassar, white-tip and grey reef sharks at Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, the legendary Shotgun drift at The Cauldron, and macro paradise at Wainilu.

Beginners can dive too. Sites like Siaba Besar, Wainilu and parts of Tatawa Besar are calm, safe, and full of life. You can complete your PADI Open Water certification here in 3 days.

Where to start depending on your level

4. Cancar Spider Web Rice Fields — Manggarai Land Tradition 🌾

Spider Web Lingko Rice Fields Cancar Ruteng Flores

About 17km west of Ruteng (central Flores), Cancar is the most photogenic example of the lingko system — a traditional Manggarai land-division pattern where rice paddies are arranged in radial spider-web shapes. Each "slice" of the web belongs to a specific family, and the slice's size historically reflected the family's standing in the village.

The viewpoint is on a small hill — locals charge a small fee (~20,000 IDR) and a small donation supports the community. Best photography during planting season (October–November) when the fields are flooded and reflective, or near harvest (March–April) when they turn golden.

Combine your visit with Liang Bua cave (the Hobbit Cave — see #12), only 30 min away, and stop in Ruteng for traditional Kompiang bread and Manggarai coffee.

5. Kanawa Island — Snorkeling Off the Beach 🏝️

Kanawa Island near Labuan Bajo Komodo

Kanawa is a 35-hectare island about 15km from Labuan Bajo, around 1 to 1.5 hours by traditional boat. Its standout feature: a fringing reef just a few meters off the white-sand beach, meaning you can walk in from shore and be on the reef within seconds. Expect schools of fusiliers, blue-spotted stingrays, the occasional turtle, and decent hard coral cover.

There's one eco-resort on the island (basic but right on the beach) for overnight stays. Most travelers visit on a day trip from Labuan Bajo combining Kanawa with Bidadari and Sebayur. Day tour pricing is typically 200,000–300,000 IDR per person including transfers and lunch.

Honest take: if you're already booked on daily dive trips with us, you'll see equivalent or better reef from the dive boat. Kanawa is best for non-divers, families, or as a low-effort beach day before/after diving.

6. Blue Stone Beach (Penggajawa) — Volcanic Pebbles, No Sand 💎

Blue Stone Beach Penggajawa Flores Indonesia

Located between Ende and Maumere on the central-east Flores coast, Penggajawa Beach isn't a sand beach — it's a striking shoreline of smooth blue-green volcanic pebbles formed by ancient eruptions. The pebbles are also harvested commercially and exported (you'll see them used in landscaping worldwide), which raises real concerns about long-term depletion.

It's more a photo stop than a swimming destination. Combine it with a Kelimutu trip — the beach is roughly 1.5h drive from Moni village. Best light is late afternoon when the pebbles catch the warm tones.

7. Bidadari Island — The Closest Beach Day from Labuan Bajo 🌊

Bidadari Island drone view Labuan Bajo

Bidadari Island sits just 30 minutes by boat from Labuan Bajo harbour, making it the easiest island getaway in the region. The reef offshore offers respectable snorkeling — expect colorful reef fish, occasional reef sharks, and good coral coverage. There's a high-end resort (Plataran Komodo) for those wanting luxury, and a few basic beach warungs.

It's the go-to choice for travelers in mixed-interest groups: divers head out further for serious sites while non-divers enjoy beach time here, then everyone meets back at Labuan Bajo by evening. Combine Bidadari with Kanawa (#5) and Seraya (#13) on the classic "three islands" day tour.

8. Caci Dance — Manggarai Whip Ceremony 🎭

Caci Dance ceremony Manggarai Flores Indonesia

The Caci is a ceremonial whip-and-shield duel performed by Manggarai men in western Flores. Two participants take turns striking with a rattan whip while the opponent deflects with a buffalo-hide shield, all to the rhythm of gongs and drums. It's competitive but ritualistic — about honor, courage, and ancestor reverence rather than actual combat.

Catching a real Caci is harder than you'd think. It's performed at weddings, harvest festivals, and full-moon ceremonies — not on tourist schedule. Best chance: stay overnight in Wae Rebo (see #9) or ask your homestay/guide in Ruteng about upcoming events. Don't expect Bali-style daily performances. When you find one, it's the real thing — respect the spiritual context and ask before photographing close-up.

9. Wae Rebo Trek — UNESCO Manggarai Village 🥾

Traditional Wae Rebo Village Mbaru Niang houses Flores

Wae Rebo is a traditional Manggarai village perched at 1,100m altitude in central Flores, surrounded by mist-covered mountains. The village consists of seven Mbaru Niang — conical houses built entirely from local materials following 1,200-year-old construction techniques. It won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2012 for outstanding preservation.

Getting there is part of the experience: 3 hours drive from Ruteng to Denge village, then a 3–4 hour hike (9km) through lush jungle and past streams. Stay overnight in one of the Mbaru Niang houses — sleeping on woven mats with up to 8 villagers and other guests around you, eating communal meals, and waking up to mist rolling over the conical roofs.

Practical

  • Overnight stay: ~325,000 IDR/person includes dinner, breakfast, and community donation
  • Best season: April to October (dry, cooler hike)
  • What to bring: sturdy shoes, warm layer (cold at night), headlamp, cash (no ATMs)
  • Booking: arranged in Denge village on arrival, or through a guide from Ruteng

10. Sano Nggoang Lake — The Deepest Crater Lake in Flores 💧

Sano Nggoang Lake crater lake Flores

Sano Nggoang is a 5km-wide volcanic crater lake located about 35km west of Labuan Bajo, accessible by 2 to 3 hours of often-rough road. It's the deepest lake in Flores and is surrounded by hot sulfuric springs that locals consider medicinal. The setting is wild — dense forest, no resorts, occasional water buffalo grazing the shoreline, and birdsong overhead.

Activities: hike around the rim, soak in the hot springs, birdwatching (over 100 species recorded), or stay in a homestay in Wae Sano village for cultural immersion. Best for travelers wanting to escape Labuan Bajo's growing tourism crowd and see a side of Flores most visitors miss.

11. 17 Islands Marine Park (Riung) — A Quieter Marine Park 🐢

17 Islands Marine Park Riung Flores

In central-north Flores near the town of Riung, this lesser-known national park covers 17 uninhabited or semi-inhabited islands with reefs, white-sand beaches, and one resident colony of flying foxes on Pulau Ontoloe. The reefs are healthy and accessible to snorkelers, but coral diversity and pelagic life don't compete with Komodo — it's quieter and smaller-scale.

Half-day or full-day boat tours leave from Riung harbour (typically 500,000–800,000 IDR for a small group boat). Easy to add to a Flores road trip between Bajawa and Ende. Better suited for travelers doing the full cross-island route than those based exclusively in Labuan Bajo.

12. Hobbit Cave (Liang Bua) — Where Homo Floresiensis Was Found 🗿

Liang Bua Hobbit Cave archaeological site Flores

Liang Bua is the archaeological site where, in 2003, researchers discovered the remains of Homo floresiensis — a previously unknown species of hominin, just over 1 meter tall, who lived on Flores until approximately 50,000 years ago. The discovery rewrote what we thought we knew about human evolution and earned the species the nickname "the hobbits."

The cave is just 14km from Ruteng in central Flores (30 min drive). You can walk into the cave itself — it's an open chamber with viewing platforms — and visit the small adjacent museum. Entry fee is ~50,000 IDR. Combine with Cancar rice fields (#4) for a half-day from Ruteng. Visit time: about 1 to 2 hours including the museum.

13. Seraya Island — Reefs and a Quiet Fishing Village 🐟

Seraya Island fishing village Komodo

Seraya is a small inhabited island about 45 minutes by boat from Labuan Bajo, known for healthy snorkeling reefs and a working fishing village on the southern end. You can wander through the village, eat grilled fish at small warungs run by local families, and snorkel directly off the beach. It's less developed and less touristy than Bidadari (#7) — exactly what some travelers are looking for.

Often paired with Kanawa and Bidadari on day-trip combos from Labuan Bajo. Some boat operators include a fishing village walking tour and lunch.

14. Love Hill (Bukit Cinta) — The Labuan Bajo Sunset Spot 🌅

Love Hill sunset viewpoint Labuan Bajo Flores

A small hilltop about 10 minutes by motorbike from Labuan Bajo center, Love Hill (Bukit Cinta) offers a panoramic 270° view over the bay, the boats anchored offshore, and the surrounding islands. It's the go-to local sunset spot — and yes, the name comes from the heart-shaped tree silhouettes at the summit.

Entry is around 10,000–20,000 IDR per person. Come 45 minutes before sunset to grab a good spot — it gets busy from 5pm onwards. Pair with dinner at Le Resto back in town, or hit Paradise Bar for the post-sunset crowd.

15. Bajawa & Ngada Traditional Villages 🛖

Bajawa town Ngada villages central Flores

Bajawa is a cool, mountainous town in central Flores at 1,100m altitude — bring a jacket. It's the gateway to the Ngada traditional villages: Bena, Luba, and Tololela. These villages preserve ancestral architecture, megalithic stones, and seasonal ceremonies, particularly around Reba (the Ngada new year, usually mid-January).

Bena is the most visited and photographed — impressive megaliths, vivid weaving, and active ceremonial culture. Luba and Tololela are smaller and quieter, often better for genuine local interaction. Bajawa is also a coffee-growing region — visit a roastery for fresh Flores Bajawa Arabica, considered one of Indonesia's finest.

Pair Bajawa with Mount Inerie (#16) for adventure and 17 Islands (#11) en route to Ende.

16. Mount Inerie — Sunrise Summit at 2,245m 🏔️

Mount Inerie volcano sunrise Flores Indonesia

Mount Inerie is the highest peak in central Flores at 2,245m, an active stratovolcano with a near-perfect conical shape rising above the Ngada highlands. The summit hike is serious — 4 to 6 hours up, 3 to 4 down, with technical loose-scree scrambling near the top. Start time: 2am for a sunrise arrival at the summit.

Guide is mandatory (arrange in Bajawa, typically 500,000 IDR for the day). Not for casual hikers — you need solid fitness, good shoes, and tolerance for cold, wind, and altitude. The reward: a 360° panorama of Flores, the southern Sumba sea, and on a clear day, distant volcanoes on neighboring islands.

17. Koka Beach — Twin White-Sand Bays Near Maumere 🏖️

Koka Beach twin bays Maumere Flores

Koka Beach is a pair of twin crescent white-sand bays separated by a rocky headland, located about 40km west of Maumere in east Flores. The water is calm enough for swimming and the reef just offshore has decent snorkeling. It's significantly less touristy than the beaches around Labuan Bajo — you'll often have it nearly to yourself.

Best paired with a visit to Nuabari (#18) and the Maumere area, particularly if you've flown into Maumere (MOF) before driving west to Kelimutu and beyond. Bring your own snorkel gear — rentals on-site can be hit or miss.

18. Nuabari Villages — Off-the-Beaten-Path Megaliths ⚱️

Nuabari traditional village megalithic stones Flores

Nuabari is a small traditional village near Maumere (east Flores) where massive megalithic tombstones still stand at the village center, marking ancestral graves and ceremonial spaces. It receives almost no tourists, making for genuine cultural encounters rather than performative ones. The village chief typically welcomes visitors with tea after a short tour.

Hire a local guide from Maumere (~300,000 IDR/day including driver). Combine with Koka Beach (#17) for a relaxed day from Maumere — beach in the morning, cultural visit in the afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions About Flores

What is the best time to visit Flores Indonesia?

The dry season from April to November offers the best weather for outdoor activities, diving and trekking. December to March is rainier but excellent for manta rays in Komodo and quieter for cultural visits.

How many days do you need in Flores?

For Komodo only (Labuan Bajo base) — 4 to 5 days is the realistic minimum (1 dragon trip, 2-3 dive days, 1 buffer). For a full Flores trip including Kelimutu, Wae Rebo and Bajawa, plan 10 to 14 days because driving between regions takes 8-12 hours per leg.

Is Flores better than Bali?

They serve different travelers. Flores offers wilder nature, world-class diving, far fewer crowds and authentic culture. Bali has more infrastructure, nightlife and surf. Many travelers combine both — Bali for arrival/departure logistics, Flores for the actual experience.

How do you get to Flores?

Fly into Komodo Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo from Bali (Denpasar DPS) or Jakarta (CGK). Flight time from Bali is ~1 hour. There is no ferry from Bali. For east Flores: Maumere (MOF) or Ende (ENE).

Do you need a guide to visit Komodo National Park?

Yes. Guides are mandatory for trekking on Komodo and Rinca islands to see the dragons safely. For diving, you must go with a licensed PADI dive center. Park entrance fees are payable on arrival in cash IDR.

Is Flores safe for solo travelers?

Yes. Flores is one of the safest destinations in Indonesia for solo travelers. Locals are extremely welcoming. Standard precautions apply: secure valuables, be cautious with motorbike rentals if inexperienced, and use registered dive operators.

Can beginners dive in Komodo?

Absolutely. While Komodo is famous for strong currents at some sites, plenty of dive sites like Wainilu, Siaba Besar, and parts of Tatawa Besar are perfect for beginners and PADI Open Water students. We run daily beginner-friendly trips and offer full PADI Open Water certification in 3 days.
