How We Build Your Group: Experience Lanes
No random mixing, ever. Teams are formed by certification level, recent dive activity and current experience — beginners dive with beginners, advanced with advanced.
Four Parallel Lanes
- Discovery: pool session + easy reefs
- Leisure A: OW divers, low-current sites
- Leisure B: AOW divers, moderate current
- Advanced: strong-current sites
Lanes are decided from your pre-trip form, a first-dive evaluation, and the day's conditions. The Trip Leader has the final safety call.
Site Eligibility by Lane
| Site Type | Eligible Lanes |
|---|---|
| Easy reefs (Siaba Besar, Sebayur) | Discovery, Leisure A |
| Moderate drifts (Tatawa, Mawan, Manta Point) | Leisure B, Advanced |
| High-flow pinnacles (Batu Bolong, Castle Rock) | Leisure B (calm window), Advanced |
On-the-Day Reassignment
Conditions change and so do we. Here is exactly what happens if something isn't right.
| Situation | Action | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Diver struggling with current | Signal + shelter pause; shorten route | Finish safely or easier lane next dive |
| Skill gap identified | Guide assistance; post-dive coaching | Stay in lane or step down one dive |
| Major comfort gap in team | Split team; assign private guide | Both sub-groups dive comfortably |
| Fatigue, seasickness, not fit to dive | Skip dive; hydrate and rest on board | Rejoin on a calmer site if ready |

Site-Specific Safety Briefings
Before diving Komodo's advanced sites, we provide detailed safety briefings with clear go/no-go criteria.
Batu Bolong (Advanced)
Go/No-Go: maximum 3 knots — visibility 15m+ — lee side or slack tide only — never drop in the "split"
Castle Rock & Crystal Rock (Advanced)
Go/No-Go: north approach — current assessed before entry — escape route briefed — abort if visibility drops below 10m
Tatawa Besar & Siaba (Beginner-Friendly)
Why these sites: protected bays, shallow depths, sandy bottom, high turtle and manta probability
Our Briefing Doctrine
Comprehensive Dive Briefings (20–30 min)
Before every dive, we cover:
- Site topography and dive plan
- Current analysis and conditions
- Site-specific safety rules and signals
- Emergency procedures (separation, low air, downcurrent)
- Buddy team assignments
- SMB deployment timing
Golden Rule: No Negative Entries
We never conduct negative entries. This is a deliberate safety choice.
Fast entries, but the entire group meets at the surface. The guide performs a visual check on every diver before signalling the descent together.
Pre-Dive Safety Checks
- Buddy check: BWRAF system mandatory
- Computer check: depth and time settings verified
- Nitrox analysis: every tank analyzed and logged
- SMB deployment: practice with your Dive Guide for first-time users
- Hand signals review: including emergency signals

500+ Komodo Dives EachFrequently Asked Safety Questions
Are SMBs mandatory for divers in Komodo?
Yes, absolutely. SMBs are mandatory on all dives. Strong currents and boat traffic make surface signaling essential. Rentals are available, and our guides will show you the deployment technique.
How are dive groups and lanes decided?
Never at random. We combine your pre-trip form, a first-dive evaluation, and the day's conditions to place you in the right experience lane. The Trip Leader has the final safety call.
What if my buddy is more advanced than me?
We split lanes or arrange a private guide so both of you enjoy the best sites for your respective levels — no one gets dragged beyond their comfort zone, no one gets held back.
Can I book a private guide for personalized safety?
Yes. Private guides are available for nervous divers, photographers, or anyone preferring 1:1 attention. See our pricing page for current rates, and book in advance.
Do you accept beginner divers in Komodo?
Yes, with proper preparation: a Scuba Refresher if needed, beginner-suitable sites (Tatawa, Siaba), detailed current briefings, and 2:1 guide ratios.
Do I need a refresher before diving Komodo?
It depends on your last dive. Under 6 months: optional. 6–12 months: a 1-hour pool refresher is recommended. Over 12 months: a 2-hour pool session is highly recommended, and your first day is planned on easier sites.
How do you assess diver skills before advanced sites?
Progressive assessment: logbook review at check-in, then a first dive at a moderate site where our guides observe buoyancy and comfort. Based on this, we recommend appropriate sites.
Are reef hooks mandatory?
Recommended but not mandatory. Very useful on advanced sites. We provide rentals and demonstrate proper use (hook dead rock only, never living coral).
