What Is PADI Discover Scuba Diving?
A supervised first experience for people who want to try scuba without committing to a full certification course.
PADI Discover Scuba Diving, often called DSD or a try dive, is an experience—not a diver certification. You learn essential safety information and basic scuba skills before exploring underwater with a PADI professional.
After the program, you are not certified to dive independently. If you want a lifelong qualification, continue to the PADI Open Water Diver course.
Ocean Direct
Receive the theory and safety orientation, practise required skills in sheltered shallow water and complete 2 instructor-guided ocean dives in one day.
Pool + Ocean
Learn the first skills in the resort pool on day 1, then complete 2 guided ocean dives in Komodo National Park on day 2.
Your Beginner Scuba Experience
The exact timetable and sites are confirmed according to park logistics, tides and sea conditions.
From briefing to your first Komodo dives
Meet the team before the ocean day to complete registration, medical paperwork and equipment fitting.
Wildlife encounters and specific dive sites are never guaranteed. The team selects suitable sites daily based on conditions and participant readiness.

FAQ — Discover Scuba Diving in Komodo
Is Discover Scuba Diving a certification?
No. PADI Discover Scuba Diving is a supervised experience and may provide digital PADI recognition, but it does not certify you to dive independently. Complete the PADI Open Water Diver course for a full entry-level certification.
Do I need previous experience or a dive certification?
No. The program is designed for first-time divers. You must be at least 10, complete the required medical paperwork and be comfortable maintaining yourself at the surface.
How deep can I dive during a DSD?
The maximum open-water depth is 12 m, but you never have to go that deep. Your actual depth depends on your comfort, demonstrated skills, conditions and the PADI Instructor's assessment.
Should I choose Ocean Direct or Pool + Ocean?
Ocean Direct fits travellers who want a one-day program and are comfortable starting the required skills in sheltered shallow water. Pool + Ocean adds a dedicated pool session the day before and offers a more gradual introduction.
What's included in the DSD price?
Both packages include PADI program registration, the theory and safety briefing, required skills, 2 guided ocean dives, full equipment, boat and crew, Komodo National Park fees, lunch and snacks on the ocean day, instruction and PADI digital recognition. The pool package also includes the on-site pool session.
Are Komodo National Park fees included?
Yes. Park fees for the scheduled ocean dives are included in both published DSD package prices. Dragon Dive collects the required participant information and organises registration before departure.
Can I add a third ocean dive?
Yes. A third dive may be added at the current extra-dive price shown in the package section when the boat schedule, conditions, your comfort and the instructor's approval allow it.
Can my DSD count toward PADI Open Water?
It may count when the required additional skills and documentation are completed and you begin the full Open Water course within PADI's allowed timeframe. Tell the team before your DSD if you may continue so the instructor can plan it correctly.
