PADI Tec 40 at a glance
Maximum depth

Progressive dives after knowledge development and practical sessions.
One deco cylinder
Decompression gas up to 50% oxygen, as per PADI Tec 40 standards.
Divers per instructor
Time to drill every procedure until it is automatic.
How the PADI Tec 40 course works
Three building blocks: theory, practical application in shallow water, then four training dives that go progressively deeper.
PADI Tec 40 is the entry level of the PADI Tec Deep Diver programme. It bridges recreational and technical diving: you keep the 40-metre depth you already know from Deep Diver, but you learn to plan and carry out dives that need a short decompression stop, with the redundant equipment and the gas-planning discipline that make it safe.
Komodo is a demanding place to learn: real currents, deep walls, cold thermoclines in the south. That is exactly why the procedures you drill here — gas switches, valve shutdowns, deployment of a surface marker, managing a decompression schedule — become second nature.
Knowledge development
The theory behind decompression diving, at your pace with your instructor.
- Technical diving: risks, mindset and limits
- Gas planning: consumption, reserves, turn pressure
- Decompression theory and planning with a dive computer
- Oxygen exposure and enriched air for decompression
- Equipment configuration and team procedures
Practical application sessions
Equipment set-up and skills in shallow water before any deep dive.
- Backmount doubles or sidemount configuration
- Rigging and carrying a decompression cylinder
- Valve shutdowns and gas-switch procedures
- Buoyancy and trim with technical equipment
- Deploying a surface marker buoy from depth
Four training dives
Progressively deeper dives that end with a planned decompression profile.
- Simulated and real decompression stops
- Problem management: gas loss, free-flow, lost gas switch
- Team awareness and positioning in current
- Limited-decompression dive to 40 metres
- Debrief and certification as PADI Tec 40 Diver
A typical Tec 40 programme
Plan three to four days in Labuan Bajo. The exact rhythm follows your progress and the sea conditions.
From theory to your first decompression dive
Sites and timings are chosen on the day with your instructor according to tides, currents and your comfort.

PADI Tec 40 prerequisites
Technical diving starts with solid recreational experience. These are the PADI standards; we check them with you before confirming your dates.
Certifications
PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent), PADI Enriched Air Diver (or equivalent) and PADI Deep Diver — or proof of at least 10 dives to 30 metres.
Experience
At least 30 logged dives, including 10 enriched-air dives deeper than 18 metres. Missing a dive or a specialty? We can schedule the Deep or Enriched Air course right before Tec 40.
Age and medical
18 years or older. A diver medical form signed by a physician within the last 12 months is mandatory for technical training.
Comfort in current
Komodo dives are in current. Good buoyancy and calm reactions matter more than the number on your certification card; your instructor assesses this on the first dives.
Next level: PADI Tec 45 in Komodo
Once you hold Tec 40, Tec 45 extends your limits to 45 metres and to full decompression diving with a richer decompression gas.
PADI Tec 45 Diver trains you to plan and carry out single and repetitive decompression dives to 45 metres, using a single decompression cylinder with up to 100% oxygen, in backmount doubles or sidemount. It is the step before the deeper PADI Tec levels.
The course follows the same structure as Tec 40 — knowledge development, practical application and four training dives — with more demanding decompression schedules, team problem-solving and accelerated decompression on oxygen.
Who can enrol
- PADI Tec 40 Diver (or qualifying certification)
- PADI Rescue Diver (or equivalent) with CPR and first aid within 24 months
- 18 years or older
- At least 50 logged dives, including 10 dives deeper than 30 metres
- Physician-signed medical form within 12 months
What you add to Tec 40
- Decompression dives to 45 metres, single and repetitive
- Decompression gas up to 100% oxygen
- Longer, multi-stop decompression schedules
- Team management of problems during decompression
- Certification as PADI Tec 45 Diver
How to book a Tec course
Tec 40 and Tec 45 are scheduled on request and taught in small groups. There are no fixed departure dates and we do not guarantee availability in advance: send us your travel dates and your certifications, and we tell you whether we can run the course during your stay.
Plan three to four days for Tec 40 and the same again for Tec 45; the combined package fits in about a week. Many divers add a few days of fun diving on our daily boats before or after.
Why train Tec with Dragon Dive Komodo
Dragon Dive Komodo is a PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Resort in Labuan Bajo, led by resident PADI Course Director William Baillet. All PADI courses are taught in-house, from Open Water to instructor level, which is why the whole path to Tec 40 — Deep, Enriched Air, Rescue, Self-Reliant, Sidemount — is available at the same resort.
On the technical side: four Bauer electric compressors, 15-litre cylinders, enriched air and sidemount configurations in stock, a private training pool for the shallow-water sessions, and dive sites in Komodo National Park that offer genuine walls and pinnacles to 40 metres and beyond. Groups are limited to 4 divers per instructor.
