PADI IDC in Indonesia — Dates, Real Costs & How to Choose
Every 2026–2027 session date, the full all-in cost with nothing hidden, and an honest Komodo vs Bali comparison — what it actually takes to become a PADI Instructor in Indonesia.
Quick answer
Next session: IDC starts 15 November 2026, Instructor Exam on 2–3 December — with the 1,190 AUD PADI IE fee waived. Zero to Hero candidates start their Divemaster on 12 or 18 October.
Cost: 17-day IDC from €1,199 + 22,250,000 IDR PADI materials & C9 visa + 1,792 AUD PADI fees. Realistic all-in: ~€3,230 — and every line is itemized below.
2027 sessions: May · July · September · December (IE fee also waived in December 2027).
Why do your IDC in Indonesia?
Three practical reasons.
Conditions: you train in the same warm, current-swept, biodiverse waters you will later teach in — not a pool-and-classroom environment.
Cost of living: accommodation, food and daily expenses during a 2–3 week program are a fraction of what they would be in Australia or Europe.
Employment: Indonesia has one of the highest densities of dive operations in the world, and instructors who trained locally — with a reference from a local Course Director — are consistently first in line for jobs.
But "IDC Indonesia" covers very different realities, from large classroom-style programs to small-group coaching inside a national park. The comparison most candidates are really making is Komodo vs Bali.
Komodo or Bali? An honest comparison
Both produce certified instructors. The differences are structural, not about the quality of any single school:
| Typical Bali IDC | IDC in Komodo (Labuan Bajo) | |
|---|---|---|
| Group size | Larger cohorts are common — some centers run 10–20 candidates per IDC | Small groups by design — you are coached individually, not processed |
| Diving during training | Many training dives on easy, sheltered sites | Komodo National Park within reach — currents, drift, big animals: the conditions you'll actually teach in |
| After the IDC | Crowded local job market with many fresh instructors each month | Growing destination, fewer instructors per operator, direct hiring network through your Course Director |
| Languages | Mostly English-only instruction | English and French guaranteed; German and Spanish seasonally |
If your priority is the lowest sticker price in a big-city environment, Bali has options. If your priority is instructor-level dive skills, individual coaching and a differentiated CV, Komodo is hard to beat.
IDC Indonesia 2026–2027 — session dates
Dragon Dive Komodo runs scheduled IDC sessions with a resident Course Director — no waiting for a visiting CD to fly in:
| Session | IDC / Prep starts | Instructor Exam (IE) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2026 | IDC: 15 November 2026 (Zero to Hero: Divemaster starts 12 or 18 October) | 2–3 December 2026 | PADI IE fee waived (1,190 AUD) |
| May 2027 | Prep: 17 April 2027 | 5–6 May 2027 | |
| July 2027 | Prep: 26 June 2027 | 14–15 July 2027 | |
| September 2027 | Prep: 4 September 2027 | 22–23 September 2027 | |
| December 2027 | Prep: 13 November 2027 | 1–2 December 2027 | PADI IE fee waived (1,190 AUD) |
December sessions: your PADI IE fee is covered. The 1,190 AUD examination fee normally paid to PADI is waived for candidates on the December 2026 and December 2027 sessions — a direct saving on the least negotiable line of any IDC budget.
How much does a PADI IDC in Indonesia really cost?
Comparing IDC prices is where most candidates get misled. The advertised course fee is only one of three cost blocks — the other two are paid to PADI or for official materials and are identical wherever you train. Any center quoting a "total" that skips them is hiding cost, not saving you money.

| Item | Paid to | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| PADI materials & C9 visa — IDC eLearning (6.5M) · EFR Instructor eLearning (6M) · instructor slates (6M) · C9 visa (3.75M) | PADI / immigration | 22,250,000 IDR (~€1,271) |
| PADI Instructor Examination fee — waived on December sessions | PADI directly | 1,190 AUD |
| PADI first-year instructor membership | PADI directly | 602 AUD |

What no other IDC in Indonesia includes: the Candidate Portal
The single biggest predictor of IE success is structured theory preparation — and it's the part most IDCs leave you to handle alone. The Candidate Portal maps your programme day by day and holds every study resource in one place: theory modules, quizzes, mock exams, your notes and the reference library. It runs in your browser; nothing to install.
Five interactive dive theory modules
Dive theory is where the IE is won. Instead of pointing you at a stack of PDFs, each subject is rebuilt as a purpose-made, scrolling module with simplified explanations, worked calculations, memory techniques and reveal-answer exercises.
Physics
Pressure, buoyancy, gas laws and light & sound underwater — every calculation type you'll meet at the IE, worked step by step.
Physiology
Respiration and circulation, decompression illness, thermal and pressure-related injuries — and how to explain them to future students.
Equipment
Regulators, cylinders, valves and computers — function, maintenance and the exam questions that follow from each.
Decompression Theory
Tissue compartments, halftimes, the RDP and dive computers — the subject candidates fear most, broken into short sequential steps.
Skills & Environment
Tides, currents, waves and aquatic life, plus the skill and environment knowledge threaded through the standards exam.
Reference library & notes
The current PADI Instructor Manual, prescriptive lesson guides, prep cards, quick reviews, RDP tools — plus one single place for your own notes.
Plus the exam engine: 900+ exam-style practice questions and 5 complete mock exam series (A–E) that mirror the real Instructor Examination — you arrive at your IE having already sat the exam five times. And if it's still not enough: pass guarantee, free retake.
Who trains you
Your IDC is led by William Baillet, founder of Dragon Dive Komodo and PADI Platinum Course Director (2026) — francophone, resident on-site year-round. He is supported by James, Manager and IDC Staff Instructor (English).
Instruction in English and French is guaranteed on every session — Dragon Dive Komodo is the reference for francophone professional dive training in Indonesia — with German and Spanish available seasonally. The center is the only PADI 5★ IDC Dive Resort in Labuan Bajo, Green Fins Silver certified.
Frequently asked questions
What are the prerequisites for a PADI IDC?
Be a certified PADI Divemaster (or equivalent leadership level), 18+, with 60+ logged dives to start (100 by your IE), certified for at least 6 months, current EFR/CPR within 24 months, and a physician-signed medical statement within 12 months. Not a Divemaster yet? The Zero to Hero pathway takes you from certified diver to instructor in one stay.
How long does the IDC take?
17 days, ending with the two-day Instructor Examination. December 2026 session: IDC from 15 November, IE on 2–3 December. Zero to Hero candidates start their Divemaster on 12 or 18 October 2026.
How much does the IDC really cost, all fees included?
€1,199 course (IDC + MSDT Prep €1,599) + 22,250,000 IDR materials & C9 visa + 1,792 AUD PADI fees (IE 1,190 + membership 602) = ~€3,230 all-in. On December sessions the 1,190 AUD IE fee is waived. Flights, meals and insurance separate.
Can I do the IDC in French?
Yes — your Course Director is francophone and French instruction is guaranteed on every session, alongside English. German and Spanish are available seasonally.
Is the IE fee really waived?
Yes. For December sessions (2026 and 2027), the 1,190 AUD PADI Instructor Examination fee is covered. Your remaining PADI cost for those sessions is the first-year membership (602 AUD).
What is the difference between the IDC and Zero to Hero?
The IDC is for certified Divemasters. Zero to Hero takes you from certified diver to instructor in one continuous program: Divemaster first (from 12 or 18 October for the December session), then straight into the IDC — same team, same sites, Candidate Portal from day one.
