🚤 Our fleet & facilities
Everything in-house: own boats, own compressors, own equipment. No rentals, no compromises.
Day boats
We run a small fleet of day boats with allocation adapted daily by course, North Komodo trip or level — so guests are never mixed into one packed boat. Each carries a maximum of 15 divers, not the 25–30 loaded onto larger operators' boats, split into small teams of 4–5 per guide.
As a PADI 5-Star IDC resort, divemaster trainees often assist in the water, pushing the real ratio even lower — a deliberate choice for comfort and dive quality over filling seats.
In-house compressor station
We run four electric Bauer compressors with a Bauer Securus filtration monitoring station — the only dive resort in Labuan Bajo to operate one. Every tank is filled on-site for consistent, verified air quality and Nitrox, with no third-party fills. Our well-maintained fleet includes 15L tanks and dedicated sidemount setups, so whether you're on air, Nitrox or diving sidemount, your gas is filled to standard in-house — no compromises.
Top Komodo dive sites
We dive 60+ sites — and pick the right ones daily based on tides, conditions and your experience.
Batu Bolong
Iconic pinnacle, swarming with fish. Sharks, turtles, vibrant corals.
Manta Point
Manta cleaning station — 10+ mantas common in season (Nov–Apr peak).
Castle Rock
Open-ocean seamount — grey reef sharks, giant trevallies, pelagic action.
Siaba Besar
"Turtle City" — gentle reef, great for beginners and photographers.
What our recent divers say
Verified Google reviews from divers who joined our daily Komodo trips this season.
"Did a 1-day fun dive trip (3 dives) with Dragon Dive Komodo and had such an amazing experience. The dive spots were absolutely stunning — I was lucky enough to see many mantas! What I really appreciated was how ethical and respectful the guides were with marine life. They made sure we kept a proper distance, never disturbed the mantas. It was clear they genuinely care about protecting the ocean."
"One of the best experiences of my several months of travel. I was told Flores was a marvelous place to dive, and they didn't lie! The dive center was perfect; they took the time to explain everything and refresh our knowledge a bit. S/O to James and Stefan, the instructors, and to Léa and Warren, the dive masters."
"Excellent endroit pour les amateurs de plongées. Des formules bien adaptées. Au niveau plongées des DM top. Merci à Alex pour nos plongées et un ballet de raies manta, mais un grand merci à James le maestro du ballet de raies manta — rien que 8 mantas observées !"
Multilingual PADI guides, briefed every morning
Different qualified PADI guides rotate daily on our trips — all certified, multilingual and fully briefed at sunrise on the day's conditions, currents and dive plan. Including James, Léa, Alex, Rocky, Warren, Stéphane, Stefan and more.

About Labuan Bajo as a diving gateway
Labuan Bajo is the main departure point for Komodo National Park diving. Daily Labuan Bajo scuba diving trips give you flexibility — combine world-class diving with hotel comfort, rest days, PADI courses or family travel, without committing to a liveaboard. All trips are organized from our Labuan Bajo dive center on Jalan Mutiara before departing every morning to Komodo National Park.
The town sits on the western tip of Flores. Direct flights connect daily from Bali (Denpasar) and Jakarta. Most divers stay 4–8 nights and combine 2 to 5 dive days with a Komodo dragon trek and a sunset over Padar Island.
What makes Komodo island diving unique
Komodo island diving is defined by nutrient-rich currents that attract extraordinary marine life year-round. Water temperatures range from 24°C in the south to 28°C in the north and central areas. Our PADI guides match every group to the right sites based on experience and daily tidal conditions.
Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering more than 1,700 km² of protected reef inside the Coral Triangle. The Park is divided into three zones — north (cooler, current-driven pinnacles, pelagics), central (warm reefs, manta cleaning stations, easier profiles) and south (plankton-rich, manta-feeding sites, lower visibility but biggest marine action).
Marine life you'll encounter on Komodo dives
A typical Komodo diving day can include the following — exact encounters depend on season, tides and site.
Highlights beyond the icons: napoleon wrasse on the bigger pinnacles, eagle rays on drift sites, frogfish and pygmy seahorses on macro slopes, and seasonal pelagic action (dogtooth tuna, schooling barracudas, giant trevallies).
Drift diving in Komodo — currents, safety & top sites
Komodo is one of Southeast Asia's premier drift diving destinations. Currents range from gentle flow to powerful surges — which is why daily site selection matters. Our dive leaders choose sites each morning based on tides, visibility and diver certification. Beginners are guided to calmer alternatives on the same days.
SMB practice, reef-hook briefings and negative-entry techniques are part of every drift-site briefing. Advanced certification is required on the strongest drift sites.
Best time for Komodo diving — month by month
Komodo dives year-round. Conditions vary by month — here's what to expect.
January–February. Wet season window. Water 27–29°C in central and north, calmer south. Visibility 10–20 m. Manta activity strongest in the south (Manta Alley, Makassar). Some travel days affected by rain — we move daily routes to sheltered sites.
March. Transition month. Visibility improving 15–25 m. Mantas still around in the south. Currents picking up in the north as dry season approaches. Good month for variety.
April–May. Start of dry season. Water 26–28°C. Visibility 20–30 m. Excellent in north (Castle Rock, Crystal Rock) and central (Batu Bolong). Manta sightings shift more central-north. Calm seas.
June–August. Peak dry season and peak diving season. Water cooler 24–27°C, occasional thermoclines below 20 m. Visibility 25–35 m. Strong currents in north — pelagic action at its peak. Recommended for Advanced divers. Wetsuit 3 mm minimum, many use 5 mm.
September–October. Tail of dry season. Conditions still excellent in north and central, water warming again. Visibility 20–30 m. Fewer divers in the water than peak months — quieter dive sites.
November–December. Start of wet season window. Water 27–29°C. South park comes alive again — Manta Alley and Makassar deliver big manta activity. Visibility 15–25 m. Calmer surface conditions for divers who prefer warm water and manta encounters.

Certification levels and which Komodo sites you can dive
Komodo has dive sites for every certified level. We always match site selection to your certification and current experience — not the other way around.
PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent). You can dive Siaba Besar, Mawan, Mini Wall, Sebayur, Pink Beach, Tatawa Besar on calm days and Manta Point when conditions are gentle. Profile limit 18 m. We avoid strong-drift sites and big-action pinnacles. If you arrive without certification, ask about our PADI Open Water course in Komodo.
PADI Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) with recent current experience. Full access to Batu Bolong, Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, The Cauldron, Shotgun, Three Sisters, Tatawa Kecil and all drift profiles. Profile limit 30 m. If your Advanced is more than 12 months old without recent diving, we recommend a refresh dive on day one. The PADI Advanced Open Water course in Komodo unlocks every site listed above.
PADI Rescue / Divemaster / Instructor. Same site access as Advanced. We frequently host pros joining day trips between training cycles — Nitrox is free for you on every dive. If you're considering going professional after your trip, see our PADI Divemaster course or PADI IDC.
Tec divers. We support tec profiles on request — bring your own twinset or contact us in advance for gas planning. The site selection (Castle Rock, The Cauldron, Three Sisters, deep walls in north) suits Tec40/45 profiles particularly well in dry season.
If you arrived only Open Water but want to unlock the iconic Advanced sites mid-trip, we can run the PADI Advanced over 2 days at the start of your stay and continue with fun dives on Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and The Cauldron afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
The 12 questions we answer most often before a Komodo dive day.
How does the Komodo visitor quota affect dive trips?
Komodo National Park operates with a daily visitor quota, which can make popular dates sell out faster. We include park fees in your booking to help secure your diving days. Book early to guarantee availability.
Are Komodo National Park fees included in the price?
Yes — all our trips include Komodo National Park fees (IDR 300,000 per day). There's nothing additional to pay on the boat for park access.
What's included in the dive trip price?
All our daily dive packages include:
- PADI guide (max 4–5 divers)
- Tanks, weights & basic dive equipment (BCD, regulators, mask, fins & wetsuit)
- Breakfast snack, lunch & drinks
- Safety equipment onboard (O₂, First Aid)
- Komodo National Park fees
Not included: dive insurance, alcohol and optional extras.
When is the best time for Komodo dive trips?
Year-round. April–November: calmer seas and great visibility in the north. November–April: stronger chance of manta encounters in the south. We adapt daily to conditions and tides.
Do I need Advanced certification?
Not for all sites. Many dives suit Open Water divers (Siaba, Manta Point on calm days). More challenging sites like Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and The Cauldron require Advanced certification and recent current experience.
Will I see manta rays?
Manta encounters are common at sites like Manta Point and Makassar Reef, but wildlife is never guaranteed. The best chance is typically November–April, though mantas can appear year-round depending on conditions.
Is Nitrox available?
Yes. Free Nitrox is included for certified divers on all packages (subject to availability). If you're not Nitrox certified, we can organize the PADI Enriched Air course.
Is dive insurance required?
Yes, dive insurance is mandatory for all divers. We recommend DAN coverage, available from USD 20/day at our reception. It covers hyperbaric treatment and evacuation if needed.
What equipment do you provide?
Basic dive equipment is included in our daily trip price: wing-style BCD, regulators, mask, fins and wetsuit. Premium extras such as Shearwater computers and GoPro 13 rental (IDR 150,000/day) are available separately.
Is Komodo diving suitable for beginners?
Yes. Komodo island diving offers sites for all levels. Beginners and newly certified Open Water divers can enjoy calmer sites like Siaba Besar or Manta Point on suitable days. Advanced drift sites like Batu Bolong and Castle Rock are reserved for Advanced divers with current experience. We always match the site to your certification and comfort level.
Do Komodo dive trips depart from Labuan Bajo?
Yes — all our daily Komodo dive trips depart from Labuan Bajo harbour every morning. Our dive center in Labuan Bajo is based at Dragon Dive Komodo Dive Resort on Jalan Mutiara, close to the main departure point. No hotel transfers are needed for guests staying at the resort.
What is the difference between a Komodo day trip and a liveaboard?
Day trips are best for divers staying in Labuan Bajo who want flexibility — 3 dives per day while returning to the resort each evening. Liveaboards are better for guests who want more remote sites and several consecutive dive days. For most visitors with 2–4 dive days, day trips are the easiest starting point. Divers wanting a more immersive itinerary can explore our Shenron liveaboard.
