Train with William Baillet, resident PADI Course Director in the Nusa Tenggara region — on-site and directly involved in your development. Continued DDK coaching if you need another attempt. Real Komodo conditions.
The structural facts behind every cohort we run.
Instead of comparing three packages, tell us where you are — we'll show you yours.
Step 1 of 1
You're already a Divemaster — we take you through the full 17-day IDC + IE with resident Course Director support.
Every IDC at Dragon Dive Komodo is led by William Baillet, resident PADI Course Director, and assisted by James, Staff Instructor — both on site, every day, from day one to your Instructor Examination.
Course Director · Co-Owner
Resident PADI Course Director · 17 years in diving
"Seventeen years in this industry taught me one thing: great instructors aren't produced by a schedule — they're shaped by a mentor. When you train here, you're not a number. You're the person I greet on the boat every morning, whose progress I follow dive by dive. Your success is my reputation — and honestly, my favourite part of the job."
In the water professionally since 2009, William has founded and grown several successful dive centers before building Dragon Dive Komodo. Becoming a PADI Course Director was, in his words, a revelation — the moment teaching divers turned into building professionals. Today the center runs the full pathway in-house, from first bubbles to instructor, with a dedicated classroom, a dedicated training boat, and one real obsession: passing on the passion.
Staff Instructor · IDC Assistant
PADI Staff Instructor · assists every IDC
"My job is simple: make sure no candidate ever feels lost. Whatever the question, whatever the hour — I've been exactly where you are, and I'll get you through it."
A former extreme kayaking world champion, James brings a competitor's discipline and a coach's patience to every cohort. Native English speaker, endlessly social, and one of the finest dive professionals you'll ever share the water with — he trained at Dragon Dive Komodo, was hired by Dragon Dive Komodo, and is now the face of our professional programs. During your IDC, he's the one who keeps you confident, answers the questions you're afraid to ask, and makes sure the pressure never wins.
Two mentors, one promise: you will never chase your trainers. They're on site, visible, and invested — every single day of your 17 days.
Every DDK IDC includes our Candidate Portal — the online study platform we built for our own candidates. While other centres email you PDFs, you get a structured system, from home, months before Labuan Bajo.

Once you pass the Instructor Examination, the fastest way to become hireable on day one is to add specialty instructor ratings. These can be completed on site immediately after the IE, in the same Komodo conditions you trained in.
Teach Enriched Air — the most-requested specialty worldwide. Required to count toward MSDT progression.
Certify divers to 40 m on real Komodo deep sites. A high-demand rating for dive centers running boat-based programs.
Komodo is one of the best places in the world to certify as a Drift Instructor — real currents, real briefings, real conditions.
Teach underwater photography — a rapidly growing demand worldwide, perfectly aligned with Komodo's exceptional biodiversity, crystal-clear waters, and incredible macro subjects.
Teach the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider specialty — an essential, highly sought-after safety skill globally, perfectly aligned with the demanding dive profiles and remote liveaboard environment of Komodo.
Pick the specialties that match your career goals. All can be taught on-site by William, on real Komodo sites.

Nothing changes in the program: the full 3-day preparation, the 14-day IDC, the mock IE and your protected rest day. Only the total gets smaller.
Four sessions a year; this is the one where the numbers are on your side.
There are many places to complete an IDC. The real question is not just where you get certified — it's who you become in the process.

Dragon Dive Komodo IDC
Beyond the mentorship, the infrastructure matters. Here's what training at Dragon Dive Komodo looks like next to a typical IDC setup.
| Dragon Dive Komodo | Typical IDC centers | |
|---|---|---|
| Training pool | Our own pool, on site — confined sessions on demand | Rented pool slots, or "confined water" improvised at sea |
| Training boat | Dedicated boat for pro training days | Squeezed onto the fun-dive boat, around paying guests |
| Classroom | Real dedicated classroom for theory and presentations | A café table or a shared corner of the shop |
| Accommodation | Included on site for the 17 days — walk to the boat | Extra cost, often off-site, adds up fast |
| Open-water sessions | Real boat dives on Komodo National Park sites | Shore entries to cut costs — not the conditions you'll teach in |
| Study support | Candidate Portal included — 5 theory modules, 900+ questions, mock IE series, access from booking | PDF question packs by email, or nothing until you arrive |
| Your trainers | Resident Course Director + Staff Instructor, visible and present daily | Visiting Course Director, limited hours, shared across cohorts |
Our candidates leave Komodo with more than a certification — they leave with the confidence and the network to start working.
Not a decoration — it reflects the training standards, candidate outcomes, mentorship quality and professional culture behind every IDC we run.
For those who already know what they want. Clear inclusions, no surprises.
Curriculum, prerequisites and reasons to train in Komodo specifically — expanded for those who like to read the details.
The PADI Instructor Development Course at Dragon Dive Komodo is structured across 17 days of integrated training, leading directly into the two-day Instructor Examination conducted by an independent PADI Examiner. The program is delivered on site by our resident Course Director and dedicated IDC support.
Days 1–2 — IDC orientation and Diver Safety Reset. Standards review, learning theory, the PADI System of teaching, and recalibration of core diving skills to the demonstration-quality level required of an instructor. Watermanship benchmarking against the four PADI tests is completed in this phase.
Days 3–5 — Knowledge Development presentations and classroom instruction. Candidates plan and deliver classroom and confined-water teaching presentations covering core skill circuits. The Course Director debriefs each presentation with structured feedback against the PADI Instructor Development grading slates.
Days 6–9 — Confined-water and skill demonstration teaching. Real teaching presentations in shallow water on the 24 PADI core skills, then progression into Discover Scuba Diving teaching scenarios. Candidates also rehearse the swim, snorkel and tired-diver-tow watermanship assessments.
Days 10–12 — Open-water teaching presentations. Full open-water Open Water Diver scenarios on real Komodo dive sites, including briefing, descent, in-water skill teaching, ascent control and structured debrief. Candidates also conduct Rescue Diver scenarios and emergency assistance plan reviews.
Days 13–14 — EFR Instructor (EFRI) course. Two full days of Emergency First Response Instructor training, integrating Primary Care, Secondary Care and CPR & AED teaching — a prerequisite for the Instructor Examination.
Days 15–17 — IE preparation and mock IE. Final dive theory exams across the five PADI subjects, full mock Instructor Examination conducted under IE timing, individual coaching sessions on weak areas, and administrative preparation for the PADI Examiner. Successful candidates are then formally referred to the Instructor Examination.
Throughout the 17 days, candidates also receive structured coaching on dive business basics, Divemaster supervision, dive shop logistics, and the PADI continuing education ladder — the foundations of being a hireable PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
To enroll in a PADI IDC at Dragon Dive Komodo, you must meet the following PADI standards. Where you do not, we can build a pathway to get you there before the program start — typically via our PADI Divemaster Course in Komodo.
Check the official PADI IDC prerequisites →
If you arrive without a recent Rescue or Divemaster certification, our Zero to Hero pathway integrates the missing levels before the IDC starts, so you finish your stay as a PADI Instructor without leaving Komodo.
The location where you complete your IDC shapes the experience surrounding the standardized PADI curriculum. Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting terrestrial and marine ecosystems, including coral reefs, channels, walls and seamounts. See the official UNESCO listing →
Real-world conditions. Komodo is known for tidal currents, drift dives and variable site conditions. IDC training and open-water sessions are planned conservatively according to candidate readiness, tides and weather; exposure to challenging conditions is progressive and never used as a substitute for sound risk management.
Resident Course Director and IDC support. Unlike larger-volume IDC centers where access to the Course Director can be limited, candidates at Dragon Dive Komodo work directly with William Baillet during the program, backed by the center's IDC support team. That continuity of feedback is what drives the quality of preparation for the IE.
How Komodo compares with other IDC destinations. Bali, the Gili Islands, Thailand and the Maldives each offer different combinations of price, course volume, logistics and local diving conditions. Dragon Dive's differentiators are a resident Course Director, small cohorts, an on-site pool and classroom, in-house boats and compressors, and access to Komodo's variable tidal environment. The right IDC destination still depends on your goals and learning style.
Continuity with the Divemaster pathway. Many of our candidates arrive at the IDC after completing their PADI Divemaster Course at the same center — same Course Director, same dive sites, same standards. The calendar is aligned so that Divemaster candidates can roll directly into the next available IDC without leaving Komodo. The exact dates depend on your DMT completion timing; see our full pricing page for combined-pathway quotes, or message us for a personalized calendar.
Career outcomes. Graduates have gone on to teach in Indonesia, Honduras, the Caribbean and Europe, and some have later joined Dragon Dive Komodo. These are real examples, not an employment guarantee; hiring still depends on certification status, experience, languages, legal work eligibility and the needs of each employer.
Honest answers in plain English.
William Baillet, resident PADI Course Director, leads every IDC — and James, PADI Staff Instructor, assists every single cohort. A former extreme kayaking world champion and native English speaker, James is the one by your side daily: answering questions, running you through skills, keeping your confidence up when the pressure builds. Not visiting trainers, not rotating staff — the same two mentors, on site, from day one to your IE.
To Dragon Dive (EUR): €1,199 for the IDC Standard package. Through DDK (IDR): current PADI digital materials, slates and the C9 training visa total 22,250,000 IDR. Directly to PADI (AUD): the current IE and post-pass membership fees total 1,792 AUD. The indicative all-in total is approximately €3,230 at current exchange rates, excluding flights, meals and personal insurance. PADI fees, exchange rates and December promotion eligibility are reconfirmed before payment.
You must be at least 18, hold PADI Divemaster or a qualifying leadership-level certification, have been a certified diver for at least six months, have 60 logged dives to begin the IDC and 100 to attend the IE, hold qualifying CPR and first-aid training completed within 24 months, and provide a medical statement signed within the previous 12 months. If you are not there yet, we can build a pathway through our Divemaster program.
Komodo provides experience with tidal currents, drift planning and variable site conditions alongside the standardized PADI IDC curriculum. Dragon Dive adds small-cohort support, a resident Course Director, an on-site pool, classroom, boats and professional training facilities. Actual training sites and conditions are selected conservatively.
Dragon Dive continues coaching you and lets you repeat its IDC preparation or course training without another Dragon Dive course fee. Any PADI re-examination fee, travel, accommodation beyond the included package and other third-party costs remain your responsibility.
