Group Matching Standards
How we build safe, level-matched dive teams every single day in Komodo.
Our Core Principles
1) No random mixing
Teams are formed by certification level, recent dive activity, and current experience. We do not mix brand-new divers with those seeking advanced current sites.
2) Clear “Experience Lanes”
Each boat day runs several lanes in parallel:
- Discovery & Training (Pool/Confined then easy reefs)
- Leisure A (OW comfortable, low current)
- Leisure B (AOW or experienced OW, moderate current)
- Advanced (AOW+, strong current practice)
3) Dynamic Reassignment
If conditions change or a diver struggles, we apply an on-the-day escalation matrix: easier site, lane change, or private guide option to keep everyone safe and happy.
Pre-Trip Intake & Last-Dive Policy
Your Pre-Trip Form
- Certification level & number of logged dives
- Last dive date (with location & conditions)
- Current/cold/low-vis experience (yes/no + comfort)
- Medical & insurance confirmation (DAN or equivalent)
Last-Dive Guidelines
- ≤ 6 months Join your lane after a skills refresh at briefing.
- 6–12 months Pool Scuba Refresher recommended (often required for current sites).
- ≥ 12 months Pool Scuba Refresher mandatory + first day on easier sites.
Pool Scuba Refresher (On-Site Pool)
What we review
- Buoyancy, trim & weighting
- SMB deployment & controlled ascents
- Gas checks & buddy protocols
- Mask skills & regulator recovery
- Entry/exit & boat procedures
- Brief current-drift techniques
The “Dragon Brief” (20–30 min)
Briefing Content
- Site map & topography (depths, routes, exits)
- Current forecast window & contingency options
- Team signals, spacing, lost-buddy, SMB plan
- Depth/time limits per lane; gas turn & rock-bottom
- Marine life highlights & environmental care
Before You Enter
- Weighted check & bubble check
- Computer on & nitrox % set if applicable
- SMB accessible; torch for low-light dives
- Buddy check (BWRAF)
Currents & Site Eligibility
How we choose your sites
- Tide phase & safe time windows (ebb/flood slack)
- Lane eligibility (e.g., Batu Bolong = Leisure B/Advanced)
- Boat traffic & wildlife signals (manta routes)
- Weather & visibility on the day
Typical eligibility guide
| Site Type | Eligibility |
|---|---|
| Easy reefs (Siaba Besar, Sebayur) | Discovery, Training, Leisure A |
| Moderate drifts (Tatawa, Mawan) | Leisure B, Advanced |
| High-flow pinnacles (Batu Bolong)* | Leisure B (calm window) & Advanced |
On-the-Day Reassignment Matrix
| Situation | Immediate Action | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Diver struggling with current in lane | Signal + shelter pause; shorten route | Finish safely or move to easier lane next dive |
| Skill gap identified (buoyancy/SMB) | Guide assistance; post-dive micro-coaching | Stay in lane or step down for 1 dive |
| Major comfort gap in team | Split team; assign Private Guide if requested | Both sub-groups dive within comfort zone |
| Fatigue / seasick / not fit for dive | Skip the dive; hydrate & rest on board | Rejoin on calmer site if ready |
Equipment & Nitrox Policy
Mandatory Safety Gear
- Personal dive computer required
- Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) required
- Reef hook recommended
Nitrox Availability
Nitrox is free/on-included for certified divers per our policy and production capacity.
Quick FAQ
Can beginners join Batu Bolong?
Only during very calm windows and not for first-time current divers. We typically route beginners to easier reefs first, then step up.
What if my buddy is more advanced?
We can split lanes or offer a Private Guide so both of you enjoy optimal sites at your levels.
Do I need a refresher?
If your last dive was over 6–12 months, we recommend it; over 12 months, it’s mandatory for current sites.
How are lanes decided?
Pre-trip form + first dive evaluation + conditions. Trip Leader has the final safety call.
