Komodo Liveaboard FAQ

Common questions about diving Komodo aboard Shenron

What makes Shenron different from other Komodo liveaboards?

Shenron is a boutique liveaboard focused on quality over quantity:

  • Max 8 guests — most boats take 14-22
  • Nitrox included free — others charge €100-200 extra
  • 4:1 diver-to-guide ratio — vs 6-8:1 on standard boats
  • 4 private ensuite cabins — no shared accommodation
  • PADI courses onboard — Advanced & Nitrox training available

We're not the cheapest, but we offer the best value for divers who want a premium experience without luxury prices.

How do I get to Labuan Bajo for the liveaboard?

Fly to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) airport:

  • From Bali (DPS): Multiple daily flights, ~1.5 hours
  • From Jakarta (CGK): 3 daily direct flights
  • From Kuala Lumpur: Direct AirAsia flights
  • From Singapore: Seasonal direct flights (check availability)

Tip: Arrive at least 1 day before departure. We can arrange airport transfers and hotel recommendations.

What diving certification do I need?

Requirements depend on the route:

  • North/Central routes: Open Water OK with 20+ logged dives
  • South Komodo/Alor: Advanced + Nitrox required (stronger currents, deeper sites)

Need certifications? We offer Advanced Open Water and Nitrox courses onboard. Contact us to arrange training before or during your trip.

When is the best time to dive Komodo?

Komodo offers excellent diving year-round, but conditions vary by season:

  • December-March: Best for south Komodo — cooler water (20-25°C), manta aggregations, lush soft corals
  • April-June: Transition season — good all-around conditions
  • July-August: Peak season — calmer seas in the north, strongest currents
  • September-November: Warm water, fewer crowds, mantas return south

We adjust itineraries daily based on conditions to maximize your diving experience.

What's included in the price?

Included:

  • Private cabin with ensuite bathroom, AC, hot water
  • All meals, snacks, water, tea & coffee
  • 3-4 guided dives per day
  • Tanks, weights & weight belt
  • Nitrox for certified divers (free!)
  • Beach visits and sunset spots

Not included: Komodo National Park fees (~€80-120, paid on arrival), equipment rental, alcoholic beverages, gratuities, travel insurance

Is Nitrox really included?

Yes! Nitrox is included free for all Nitrox-certified divers on every Shenron trip. This is unusual — most Komodo liveaboards charge €100-200 extra.

Nitrox is essential for multi-day diving in Komodo, extending bottom times and reducing fatigue. If you're not certified, we offer the PADI Enriched Air Nitrox course onboard — ask us about pricing.

Can beginners join the liveaboard?

Komodo diving can be challenging due to currents. Here's our guidance:

  • Newly certified (< 20 dives): We recommend gaining more experience first, or joining our day trips from the resort
  • Open Water with 20+ dives: Suitable for north/central routes in calm conditions
  • Advanced divers: Full access to all routes including south Komodo

Contact us to discuss your experience level — we'll recommend the best trip for you.

What equipment should I bring?

We provide: Tanks, weights, weight belt

Available for rent: Full Scubapro sets, dive computers, wetsuits, reef hooks, GoPro cameras

Recommended to bring:

  • 5mm wetsuit with hood (south can be cold!)
  • Dive computer (rentals limited)
  • SMB and reef hook
  • Certification cards & logbook
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, hat, light jacket
