The PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty is designed for experienced divers who want to become more independent and self-sufficient underwater. You’ll gain the confidence to handle problems on your own and add a new level of safety to every dive — whether you’re with a buddy, a group, or somewhere in between.

In Komodo, where conditions can be dynamic and adventure is around every corner, this course prepares you to manage potential challenges and enjoy more freedom while staying within safe limits and local regulations.

What You Will Learn — PADI Self-Reliant Diver

Risk Management & Dive Planning

  • Risk assessment and limitations of self-reliant / solo-style diving
  • Dive planning for self-reliant dives, including contingencies
  • Gas management and air consumption calculations (SAC/RMV)
  • Turn pressures, rock-bottom gas and emergency reserves
  • How to decide when self-reliant diving is appropriate — and when it’s not

Self-reliant training makes you a better buddy as well — more aware, more prepared, more reliable.

Back-Up Equipment & Redundancy

  • Redundant gas sources (pony bottle or similar)
  • Backup regulators, SPGs and cutting tools
  • Multiple timing & depth devices and SMB/DSMB
  • Carrying and streamlining extra gear safely
  • Equipment checks for self-reliant dives

Core Self-Reliant Skills

  • Self-rescue techniques and dealing with common emergencies
  • Navigation skills without relying on a buddy
  • Executing a full dive plan independently

📋 Course Format

The course includes independent knowledge development, instructor briefings and 3 open water training dives around Komodo with direct feedback and coaching.

On each dive, you’ll practice problem-solving, equipment use and simulated emergencies — all performed with a self-reliant mindset and redundant systems.

  • Be a certified PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 100 logged dives
  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Medically fit to dive
