Why Is Pink Beach Actually Pink?

Pink Beach — Pantai Merah in Indonesian — is one of only a handful of pink-sand beaches on Earth. The colour comes from microscopic red foraminifera and fragments of red coral that mix with the white sand. The pink glows strongest at the waterline and in soft morning light, which is exactly why our long-boat option leaves before sunrise: you get the beach at its most vivid, before the day-trip crowds arrive.

The beach sits inside Komodo National Park, a short ride from the dive sites of the central park — which is what makes combining it with two dives so natural.

The Two Dives

Karang Makassar — Manta Point

A long, gentle drift over rubble and coral bommies where reef manta rays come to feed and be cleaned. Mantas are frequently sighted here year-round, alongside turtles, sharks and eagle rays. Easy depth, easy profile — one of the most rewarding dives in the park for any level.

Mawan

A sloping white-sand reef wrapped in soft corals — a favourite of our guides for its relaxed conditions and density of life. Sweetlips, cuttlefish, turtles, and the occasional passing manta. Perfect second dive of the day.

Sites are confirmed each morning by our team based on tides and currents; if conditions ever rule one out, we substitute a site of equal quality within the central park.

Pink Beach Komodo — FAQ

Why is the sand at Pink Beach pink?

The pink colour comes from microscopic red foraminifera and fragments of red coral mixed into the white sand. The shade is strongest at the waterline and in soft morning light, which is why an early visit shows the beach at its best.

How do you get to Pink Beach from Labuan Bajo?

Pink Beach is inside Komodo National Park and is only reachable by boat from Labuan Bajo. Our day trip combines the beach visit with two guided dives, departing either at 5:00 AM on our long boat or at 7:00 AM on our Spyro speedboat.

Can beginners join the Pink Beach dive trip?

Yes. The two dive sites, Karang Makassar (Manta Point) and Mawan, are suitable for all certification levels, and we keep a maximum of 4 divers per guide. If you are not certified yet, contact us and we will suggest the best option for your experience level.

Will I see manta rays on this trip?

Karang Makassar is one of the most reliable manta sites in Komodo National Park and mantas are frequently sighted there year-round. Sightings are never certain with wild animals, but our guides know the site intimately and put you in the best position for an encounter.

Can I swim and snorkel at Pink Beach?

Yes. Pink Beach has calm, clear water and a healthy coral reef just off the sand, making it excellent for swimming and snorkelling during the beach stop before your dives.

Are Komodo National Park fees included in the price?

Yes. All Komodo National Park fees, including the Pink Beach entrance, are included in the trip price. There is nothing extra to pay on site.
