From sheltered coral reefs and manta cleaning stations to current-swept pinnacles, Komodo National Park has dives for every certified level, and we teach complete beginners in-house. Our dive leaders plan each day around the tides, the season and your certification, so no specific site or encounter is ever guaranteed. Dragon Dive Komodo was founded in 2016 and is still founder-led. William Baillet, founder and resident PADI Course Director, holds the PADI Platinum Course Director rating for 2026; James Bebbington, manager, is a PADI Master Instructor. One resident Course Director means PADI instructors are trained on site, and the same standards apply to every fun dive. Air and Nitrox are filled in-house on four Bauer compressors; 15 L tanks and sidemount sets are in stock. The resort at Jalan Mutiara, Kampung Ujung, Labuan Bajo 86754 has 19 private ensuite rooms and 3 six-bed dormitories, a private training pool and Le Resto Komodo. We are the only French-speaking dive resort in Komodo: the team works in English, French and Indonesian, with German and Spanish subject to availability.

North Komodo
Komodo's big-fish territory: open-ocean pinnacles swept by strong currents. Castle Rock brings grey reef sharks, giant trevallies and dogtooth tuna; Crystal Rock, its twin, white-tips and schools of fusiliers and barracudas; The Cauldron, also called Shotgun, is a saddle drift with a channel exit on a narrow tidal window. Dry season, March to November; negative entries timed on the tide; Advanced divers with recent current experience only.
Central Komodo
Many day trips include one or two dives here, and the zone is dived most of the year. Batu Bolong is the iconic pinnacle, Advanced-only; Manta Point, also called Karang Makassar, is the park's manta cleaning and feeding area, open to Open Water divers on gentle days; Siaba Besar is Turtle City. Tatawa Besar, Mawan, Pink Beach and Mini Wall are the easy reefs where beginners warm up; Tatawa Kecil adds a boulder field for Advanced divers.
South Komodo
Southern routes run from November to March, when the north is rough. The water is plankton-rich and at the cool end of the range, visibility drops, and manta sightings at Manta Alley are frequent in season. Manta Alley is where multiple encounters are possible in season; Three Sisters is three submerged pinnacles with pelagics and sharks when the current is on. Advanced divers only; no encounter is ever guaranteed.
Best time to dive Komodo, by region
Komodo is a year-round destination. What changes with the season is not whether you dive, but where the boat goes: North and Central Komodo from March to November, southern routes from November to March, Central sites most of the year.

Batu Bolong
Central · 5–35 m. Iconic pinnacle swarming with fish: sharks, turtles, vibrant corals. Negative entry timed on the tide.
Manta Point
Central · 5–18 m. Karang Makassar, the manta cleaning and feeding area. Season November to June depending on the zone; never guaranteed.
Castle Rock
North · 10–35 m. Open-ocean seamount: grey reef sharks, giant trevallies, dogtooth tuna, pelagic action.
Siaba Besar
Central · 5–25 m. "Turtle City": gentle reef, green turtles, blacktips on the sand, macro along the slope.

Who can dive Komodo? Levels, currents and safety
A site for every certified diver and for complete beginners. We match the site to your certification and recent experience, never the other way round.
Beginners and Open Water divers
Open Water divers, or equivalent, dive Siaba Besar, Mawan, Mini Wall, Sebayur, Pink Beach, Tatawa Besar on calm days and Manta Point when the current is gentle, within an 18 m profile limit.
Never dived? We teach Discover Scuba Diving and the PADI Open Water course in-house, starting in the resort's private training pool before the first reef dive.
Advanced divers and drift diving
At Dragon Dive Komodo, Batu Bolong, Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, The Cauldron, Three Sisters and Tatawa Kecil are reserved for divers holding PADI Advanced Open Water, or equivalent, with recent current experience, subject to the dive leader's assessment; profiles follow your certification limit, 30 m for Advanced Open Water. Briefings cover SMB deployment, current checks and negative entries; no reef hooks, no gloves.
Every boat carries oxygen and first aid; our guides are certified Rescue Diver and Emergency First Response and follow the DAN protocol. Maximum 4 divers per guide, 5 absolute. Dive accident insurance is strongly recommended, never mandatory.
Three ways to dive Komodo from Labuan Bajo
Same park, same guides, same ratio. Choose by how much time you have and how far south you want to go.
Day boats Shiryu and Smaug
The standard Komodo diving day. Shiryu carries a maximum of 14 divers and Smaug 15 divers on a normal operating day, each split into teams of maximum 4 divers per guide, 5 absolute. Three guided dives, lunch and snacks on board, back in the harbour by 16:30.
Spyro speedboat — half-day express or private charter
Spyro takes a maximum of 6 divers and reaches Batu Bolong in about 30 minutes: a half-day express trip with 2 morning dives, back by early afternoon, or a private charter with your own departure time and route. Park fees included, from Rp 3,150,000, subject to the daily schedule.
Shenron boutique liveaboard
Shenron hosts 8 guests in 4 private cabins, up to 10 with dorm beds on selected departures, for several consecutive dive days and more remote sites in one itinerary. Park fees are not included on Shenron: they are paid on arrival in Labuan Bajo at the official park rate.
Komodo National Park: rules, the SiOra quota and what is included
Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting the dragons on land and the reefs, pinnacles and manta areas underwater. Every diver pays park fees and every operator follows the same park rules. Since 1 April 2026 the park applies a quota of 1,000 visitors per day, booked through the SiOra system. It is a park-wide rule for all visitors and all operators, so popular dates can fill early: book your dive days before you fly; we collect the information needed for your park registration when you book.
With Dragon Dive Komodo the applicable standard park fees are included in every day trip and every recreational course: no park-fee charge on the boat. On the Shenron liveaboard they are not included and are paid on arrival in Labuan Bajo at the official park rate. Underwater, we apply the Green Fins code on every dive: no touching, no gloves, no reef hooks.

Can beginners dive in Komodo?
Yes, at the right level. Complete beginners start with a supervised Discover Scuba Diving experience, after a session in the resort's private training pool, or take the PADI Open Water course in-house. Certified Open Water divers dive sheltered sites such as Siaba Besar, Mawan, Mini Wall, Sebayur, Pink Beach and Manta Point on gentle days, within an 18 m profile. Current-swept pinnacles are reserved for Advanced divers with recent current experience.
When is the best time to dive Komodo?
Komodo is dived year-round; the routes follow the season. North and Central Komodo are favoured from March to November, in the dry season; southern routes run from November to March; Central Komodo is dived most of the year. Water is 24–30 °C, visibility commonly 15–30 m. Manta season runs November to June depending on the zone; encounters are never guaranteed.
Do I need Advanced certification to dive Batu Bolong or Castle Rock?
At Dragon Dive Komodo, yes. Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, The Cauldron, Three Sisters and Tatawa Kecil are reserved for divers holding PADI Advanced Open Water, or equivalent, with recent current experience, subject to the dive leader's assessment. Profiles follow each diver's certification limit, 18 m for Open Water and 30 m for Advanced, and the dive leader confirms each site in the morning on tides and conditions. Open Water divers can take the Advanced course in Komodo first.
Where and when can I see manta rays in Komodo?
Mantas are most often seen at Manta Point, also called Karang Makassar, in Central Komodo, a cleaning and feeding area dived by Open Water divers on gentle days, and at Manta Alley in the south on November to March routes. Manta season runs November to June depending on the zone; encounters are never guaranteed.
What does a Komodo dive day include?
Meet at the resort at 07:00 for check-in and breakfast, boat departure at 07:45, three guided dives in Komodo National Park with snacks and lunch on board, return to Labuan Bajo harbour around 16:30. Included: PADI guide, tanks, weights, standard dive equipment, meals, oxygen and first aid on board, and Komodo National Park fees.
Are Komodo National Park fees included, and how does the 1,000-visitor quota work?
Park fees are included in every Dragon Dive Komodo day trip and recreational course; on the Shenron liveaboard they are paid on arrival in Labuan Bajo. Since 1 April 2026 the park applies a quota of 1,000 visitors per day, booked through SiOra. It is a park-wide rule for every operator, so popular dates fill early: book your dive days in advance.
Can I book a half-day or private dive trip?
Yes. Our speedboat Spyro runs a half-day express trip with two morning dives for a maximum of 6 divers, back in Labuan Bajo by early afternoon, or a private charter with your own departure time and route. Batu Bolong is about 30 minutes away. Park fees are included; availability depends on the daily schedule.
Day trip or liveaboard — which should I choose?
Day trips suit divers staying in Labuan Bajo who want three dives a day, a bed on land each night and the freedom to add a dragon trek or a rest day. The Shenron boutique liveaboard, 8 guests in 4 private cabins, suits divers who want several consecutive dive days and more remote sites in one itinerary.
Is Nitrox available?
Yes. Nitrox EAN32 is filled in-house on our Bauer compressors. It is free for certified divers on all packages of 3 diving days or more, subject to availability, and available as a daily supplement on 1 and 2-day trips. Not yet certified? Add the PADI Enriched Air Diver course to your stay.
Is dive insurance required?
Dive accident insurance is strongly recommended for every diver in Komodo but never mandatory for recreational day trips. Check that your policy covers evacuation, decompression treatment and your planned depths; DAN membership is one option. Our boats carry oxygen and first aid, our guides are certified Rescue Diver and EFR, and we follow the DAN protocol.
