What Is the PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer?
The PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) is the highest non-management teaching rating in the PADI system. It is the credential that separates entry-level instructors from true dive professionals — and it's the qualification most resort hiring managers look for first.
To earn MSDT status, you must be a teaching-status PADI Instructor who holds at least 5 PADI Specialty Instructor ratings and has certified a minimum of 25 PADI certifications. Once you hold the MSDT, you become eligible to progress to IDC Staff Instructor and eventually to PADI Course Director.

Drift Diving Instructor
Shotgun, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock — Komodo's drift sites are the world's classroom for current diving. Teaching Drift here signals to every employer that you know what real current management looks like.
Deep Diving Instructor
Batu Bolong drops to 40m+ and Cannibal Rock to 30m. With Nitrox included on all our dives, you'll teach depth management in conditions that genuinely require it — not in an artificially deep quarry.
Underwater Naturalist Instructor
Komodo's marine biodiversity is unmatched — mantas, reef sharks, turtles, nudis, pygmy seahorses. Teaching Naturalist here means your students experience real marine ecology, not pictures in a manual.

What is the difference between OWSI and MSDT? +
An OWSI (Open Water Scuba Instructor) is the basic teaching certification. The MSDT is a higher rating that requires 5 Specialty Instructor ratings and 25 certified students. Most professional dive centers specifically request MSDT or above when hiring — the OWSI alone is increasingly seen as entry-level.
Can I do the MSDT without having done my IDC at Dragon Dive? +
Absolutely. The MSDT standalone program is open to any teaching-status PADI Instructor regardless of where you completed your IDC. As long as you meet the prerequisites, you can join our MSDT program independently. We welcome instructors from all centers.

The specialty instructor courses themselves typically take 5 to 10 days depending on your existing knowledge and the specialties chosen. Building up your 25 certifications depends on student availability — we typically plan for 10 to 20 days total for the full MSDT package. Contact us for a realistic timeline based on your situation.
What comes after MSDT — what is the career path? +
Once you hold the MSDT, the next steps in the PADI professional ladder are IDC Staff Instructor, then Master Instructor, and finally Course Director.
