In the Komodo region, water temperatures and visibility showcase fascinating variations throughout the year. The southern waters are typically on the cooler side, fluctuating between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C), while temperatures in the northern areas are slightly warmer, ranging from 77°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C).

During the months of July and August, the sea reaches its coldest, coinciding with an influx of nutrient-rich waters. This period often offers a unique diving experience, with increased marine life activity due to the nutrients.

Overall, Komodo‘s diverse underwater conditions provide divers with a range of experiences, from exploring nutrient-rich waters in cooler temperatures to enjoying the crystal-clear depths in more secluded areas.

Wetsuit Recommendation
We recommend a 5mm long wetsuit and a hood for optimal comfort while diving.

Diving Depth
You can dive up to a maximum depth of 30 meters (100 feet).

Currents
Be prepared for significant currents, whirlpools, and downdrafts on some dives. A good level of diving experience and familiarity with drift diving are recommended. Divers should bring a buoy and a signaling mirror. Although we aim to dive in the best sea conditions, they can change rapidly. The southern sites offer calmer dives rich in macro life.

Visibility
Visibility can differ significantly depending on location. Near major islands and the region of Labuan Bajo in Flores, divers might experience visibility around 50 feet (15 meters). Conversely, more remote diving spots, accessible only by liveaboard vessels, often enjoy exceptional visibility—potentially stretching to 100 feet (30 meters) or more.

When is the Best Time to Dive in Komodo?

April to August: Prime Season for Diving

The ideal months to dive in Komodo stretch from April to August. During this period, many liveaboards operate, offering unparalleled access to the region’s stunning dive sites. While Komodo is a fantastic diving destination year-round, this timeframe provides optimal conditions for several reasons.

Clear Skies and Calm Seas

April marks the end of the rainy season, ushering in clearer skies and calmer seas. This transition results in excellent pelagic action and near-perfect underwater conditions, making for a thrilling diving experience.

Temperature and Visibility

Water temperatures typically range from 68 to 82°F (20 to 28°C), varying slightly between the regions. The south tends to be cooler, while the north is warmer. July and August bring the coldest sea temperatures, enriching the waters with nutrients that attract a diverse array of marine life.Visibility can differ significantly depending on location. Near the major islands and Labuan Bajo, it usually hovers around 50 feet (15m). However, remote sites accessed by liveaboard can offer crystal-clear visibility of up to 100 feet (30m) or more.

Seasonal Surface Conditions

The choice of dive site is crucial as surface conditions can fluctuate with the seasons. The northern sites typically experience rougher seas from January to March, while the southern sites are more challenging from July to August. Planning your trip during these months ensures smoother conditions and a more enjoyable dive.In summary, if you’re planning a dive trip to Komodo, aim for the April to August window. This season offers the best balance of favorable weather, water conditions, and marine biodiversity, creating an unforgettable diving adventure.
