At Dragon Dive Komodo, your safety and enjoyment are our top priorities. To ensure an unforgettable diving experience in the stunning regions of South Komodo and Alor, we require the following certifications:

  • What certification level do I need?
    Advanced Open Water is recommended ( and mandatory fro the South Komodo and Alor Liveaboard) for Komodo’s currents, but we do offer scuba training if you’re just starting out.
  • Is Nitrox available?
    Yes, we provide Nitrox on board for longer bottom times. Ask about our PADI Nitrox Specialty if you need certification.
  • How many dives per day can I do?
    Typically up to 3 or 4 dives per day (including night dives), depending on your chosen itinerary.
  • Which months have the best conditions?
    April to August bring calmer seas, but Komodo is a year-round diving destination with unique marine life highlights each season.

How to Travel to Komodo

Planning your trip to Komodo Island has never been easier, thanks to the new direct AirAsia flights from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Whether you’re traveling from Malaysia or Singapore, these routes make reaching this stunning diving destination smooth and hassle-free.

For our Komodo dive cruises, departure and return are from Labuan Bajo (West Flores). Labuan Bajo is also served from Denpasar (Bali) and Jakarta, so connecting is simple and convenient.

Diving Conditions in Komodo

Komodo National Park presents diverse underwater conditions, with water temperatures ranging from 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C) in the south to about 77°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C) in the north. During July and August, cooler waters bring nutrient-rich currents, attracting abundant marine life.

Wetsuit Recommendation: We suggest a 5mm long wetsuit and a hood for maximum comfort.

Diving Depth: You can explore down to 30 meters (100 feet).

Currents: Expect strong currents, whirlpools, and occasional downdrafts. A buoy and signaling mirror are recommended, and familiarity with drift diving is a plus. Southern sites can be calmer but often focus on amazing macro life.

Visibility: Closer to major islands like Labuan Bajo, visibility may be around 50 feet (15m). More remote sites accessed by liveaboard diving can offer up to 100 feet (30m) of crystal-clear views.

From July to September, Komodo National Park enjoys sunny, dry weather with occasional southeast winds—perfect for cool evenings onboard. May and October bring calmer winds but a higher chance of rain, offering a varied and adventurous diving environment.

Best Time to Dive in Komodo

April to August: for Central & North This prime diving window offers excellent pelagic sightings, calmer seas, and clearer skies.
Many liveaboards operate extensively during these months, giving you unparalleled access to Komodo’s signature dive sites.

Water Temperatures & Visibility:
Temperatures range from about 68°F (20°C) in the south to 82°F (28°C) in the north, with cooler months in July and August.
Visibility varies by location—near Labuan Bajo around 50 feet (15m), while more remote spots can exceed 100 feet (30m).

Seasonal Surface Conditions:
The north may have rougher seas from January to March, while the south can be more challenging from July to August.
Scheduling your trip in April through August ensures smoother conditions, outstanding marine biodiversity, and an unforgettable diving adventure.

December to April: For an Amazing South Experience

During these months, Komodo’s southern waters see cooler temperatures and nutrient-rich currents,
fostering remarkable marine life diversity. Expect thrilling encounters with macro treasures,
vibrant coral life, and fewer crowds—perfect for an immersive and unforgettable dive getaway.

Water Temperature

The water temperature in Komodo varies from 27°C in the north to as low as 22°C in the south.

Wetsuit Recommendation
We recommend a 5mm long wetsuit and a hood for optimal comfort while diving.

Diving Depth
You can dive up to a maximum depth of 30 meters (100 feet).

Currents
Be prepared for significant currents, whirlpools, and downdrafts on some dives. A good level of diving experience and familiarity with drift diving are recommended. Divers should bring a buoy and a signaling mirror. Although we aim to dive in the best sea conditions, they can change rapidly. The southern sites offer calmer dives rich in macro life.

Visibility
Visibility in the north is excellent, reaching 30 meters or more, while in the south, it ranges between 10-15 meters.
