When to Dive Komodo

Komodo dives year-round — the itinerary simply follows the season. For the full monthly breakdown, see our best time to dive Komodo guide.

April – June

Post-rainy season. Lush green islands, calm seas, great visibility and warming water. Perfect for photography.

July – September

High season. Cooler water in the south, amazing visibility in the north. Big fish action and stronger currents.

October – November

Shoulder season. Warmer water returning to the south. High chance of whale sharks and migrating pelagics.

December – March

Manta season. Rainy season means fewer boats but massive manta aggregations in the South.

Central Komodo

Karang Makassar (Manta Point)

Manta cleaning station

A long drift over a rubble bottom where giant mantas come to be cleaned. Shallow (10–15 m) and accessible to most levels.

Batu Bolong

World-famous pinnacle

A legendary pinnacle descending to 85 m. Incredible biodiversity ("fish soup"), turtles and sharks. Strong currents.

Tatawa Besar

Orange soft corals

One of the healthiest reefs in the park. A colourful drift dive often ending in a calm bay. Great for turtles and sweetlips.

Siaba Besar

Turtle City & macro

Known as "Turtle City" for its resident population. The sandy patches are also a haven for rare macro critters.

Pengah Kecil

Coral garden

Rich marine life from pygmy seahorses to eagle rays. Beautiful shallow coral garden.

Tatawa Kecil

Anthias clouds

Vibrant shallow coral gardens full of anthias, caves and boulders harbouring large groupers.

Mawan

Manta station #2

A prime spot to see mantas at cleaning stations. Shallow but can have strong current.

Police Corner

Dramatic overhangs

Huge overhangs from 22 to 35 m provide shelter for massive schools of fish avoiding sharks.

Wainilu

Macro & night dive

Near Rinca. A gentle sandy slope perfect for macro photographers. Look for bobtail squids and rare critters.

Sebayur

Closest to Labuan Bajo

Easy sloping reef suitable for all levels. Home to cuttlefish and ornate ghost pipefish.

Batu Tiga

Shark channel

Strong currents attract white tip, black tip and grey reef sharks. Experienced divers only.

A submerged seamount with strong currents attracting grey reef sharks, giant trevallies and hunting action.

Crystal Rock

Colourful pinnacle

Breaks the surface at low tide. Stunning soft corals, eagle rays and schools of fusiliers.

Roller-coaster drift

Famous for the "shotgun" effect where the current shoots you through a channel. Unforgettable adrenaline rush.

Golden Passage

Premier drift dive

Fly between two healthy reefs. Spot passing reef sharks, giant trevally and manta rays drifting along.

GPS Point

Fish soup

Submerged reef with strong currents attracting schools of jacks, rainbow runners and thousands of anthias.

Banta Wall

Gorgonian fans

Wall dive on North Gili Banta. Full of beautiful gorgonian fans and frequent manta sightings.

South Komodo

Remote · cooler water · macro & mantas — best via Shenron liveaboard

Manta Alley

Mass manta aggregation

The iconic South site. In season (Dec–March), you can see dozens of mantas feeding in cooler water.

Pink Beach

Colourful reef & macro

Thousands of colourful fish including regal angelfish. A great mix of reef and macro life beside the famous pink sand.

Cannibal Rock

World-class macro

A photographer's dream. Invertebrates, nudibranchs, frogfish and rare critters cover every inch.

Torpedo Alley

Muck diving

Near Cannibal Rock. Black sand habitat perfect for ghost pipefishes, frogfishes and nudibranchs.

Secret Garden

Mobula rays

North of Padar Bay. Amazing shallow coral garden, sandy slope deeper. Look up for mobula rays.

Pillarsteen

Caves & swim-throughs

South of Padar Kecil. A wall dive with fascinating topography, caves and swim-throughs.

Three Sisters

Pinnacles

Three submerged pinnacles near Padar (5 to 40 m). Pristine corals, cooler water, mobula rays.

Yellow Wall

Invertebrates

Loh Dasami Bay. Exceptional for day and night dives. Wall cracks shelter sleeping fish and lobsters.

Boulders

Coleman shrimp

Reef sloping to dark sand. Soft coral forest. Search fire urchins for the elusive Coleman shrimp.

Langkoi Rock

Hammerheads

Exposed pinnacle. July–September chance for hammerheads. Strong currents, experts only.

End of the World

Massive schools

Southern tip of Tala Island. Steep walls, strong swell. Huge schools of surgeonfish and snappers.

Loh Sera

Giants

Tanjung Loh Sera. Exceptional diving along the point. Dogtooth tuna, giant groupers and bumpheads.

Komodo Dive Sites — FAQ

What is the best time to dive in Komodo?

Peak visibility is from June to September. For huge manta aggregations in the South, December to March is best. Komodo is a year-round destination and we simply adapt the itinerary to the season.

Is Komodo suitable for beginners?

Yes. Sites like Siaba Besar, Sebayur and Wainilu are perfect for beginners. We always check current conditions and never take inexperienced divers to demanding drift sites.

Do I need Advanced certification to dive in Komodo?

Advanced certification is highly recommended if you want to dive the northern sites such as Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, where depth and currents can be challenging. You can also complete your Advanced course with us during your stay.

Are currents really that strong in Komodo?

Komodo is famous for its currents because they bring nutrients and big fish. They can be strong on some sites, but our guides are experts at reading tides and we usually dive at slack tide to minimise difficulty and keep dives safe and enjoyable.
