How to Get to Komodo Island – Flights, Boats & Travel Tips

Dreaming of seeing wild Komodo dragons, diving with manta rays and exploring one of the world’s most beautiful marine parks? In this guide, Dragon Dive Komodo shows you exactly how to get to Komodo Island: flights to Labuan Bajo, boat options, park fees and the best time to come.

Once you’re here, we take care of the rest: daily diving, Indonesia liveaboard trips, our Shenron liveaboard and a hotel with pool in Labuan Bajo.

Where is Komodo Island and how do you get there?

Komodo National Park lies in eastern Indonesia, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. Your main gateway is the small harbour town of Labuan Bajo on Flores. All dragon treks, island-hopping tours and dive boats depart from here.

The journey in a nutshell

  • Step 1: International flight to Bali (Denpasar), Jakarta, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
  • Step 2: Domestic or international flight to Labuan Bajo (LBJ), Komodo Airport.
  • Step 3: Overnight in Labuan Bajo (this is a must before any boat trip).
  • Step 4: Day trip, diving boat or liveaboard into Komodo National Park.
Important: because of flight timings and possible delays, you should arrive at least one day before your dive trip or liveaboard. We can bundle hotel + diving into a single package to keep things simple.

Why plan your arrival with Dragon Dive Komodo?

  • PADI 5★ IDC Resort based in Labuan Bajo.
  • We help you plan flights ➜ hotel ➜ diving/liveaboard with realistic timings.

Flights to Labuan Bajo (Komodo Airport – LBJ)

The easiest way to get to Komodo is to fly into Labuan Bajo. The town is served by several domestic routes and now by direct international flights.

Boat options from Labuan Bajo to Komodo

Once you’ve landed in Labuan Bajo, you’ll need a boat to reach Komodo, Rinca, Padar and the surrounding islands. This is where Dragon Dive Komodo comes in.

Most common ways to visit Komodo by boat

  • Day tours: island-hopping to see dragons, Padar viewpoint, Pink Beach and snorkelling spots.
  • Dive day trips: our Komodo daily diving includes 2–3 dives, lunch and gear options.
  • Liveaboard cruises: multi-day trips on a phinisi or modern vessel – the best way to explore many sites (see our Shenron Liveaboard).
  • Speedboats: great for express itineraries or private custom trips.

There are also multi-day boat trips from Bali or Lombok to Komodo, but the most efficient solution is still to fly to Labuan Bajo and start from there.

Why stay overnight in Labuan Bajo?

  • Required: if your flight is delayed, you won’t miss your boat the next morning.
  • Gives you time to prepare your dives, check equipment and attend briefings.
  • Chance to relax by the Dragon Dive Komodo hotel pool after travelling.

Best time to visit Komodo Island

You can visit Komodo all year round, but some months are better depending on what you’re after: calm seas, fewer crowds, manta rays or lush landscapes.

☀️ Dry season (April – October)

  • Generally calmer seas and clear skies.
  • Excellent visibility for diving and snorkelling.
  • Great for combining dragons, islands and diving.
  • July–August = peak season (more boats and higher prices).

Best for: those who want stable conditions, bright photos and a classic “tropical holiday” vibe.

🌧 Rainy season (November – March)

  • Greener landscapes and fewer tourists.
  • Some swell and rougher seas possible, especially Jan–Feb.
  • Very good chance to see large numbers of mantas in the south when plankton is in.

Best overall balance? April–June and September–November often give you the best mix of weather, marine life and fewer crowds.

FAQ — Travelling to Komodo & Labuan Bajo

Frequencies and schedules may change, so always confirm with the airline before booking.

How much are Komodo National Park entry fees?

They depend on what you do (diving, snorkelling, trekking), the day (weekday vs weekend/holiday) and the islands visited. As a rough guide:

  • Park entrance: 150k–250k IDR / day for foreigners.
  • Diving fee: around 25k IDR / day.
  • Extra per-island charges for Padar, Rinca, Komodo and others.

With Dragon Dive Komodo, expect around 285k IDR / day / diver and 255k IDR / day / snorkeller, paid on site. We confirm updated amounts before every trip.

Can I go to Komodo without an organised tour?

No. Komodo and Rinca islands are part of a protected national park and you must visit with a licensed boat and park rangers. From Labuan Bajo you can choose:

  • Group day tours.
  • Private boats.
  • Dive trips and liveaboards.

For scuba diving, you must go with a licensed dive centre such as Dragon Dive Komodo.

Is it safe to travel to Komodo Island?

Generally yes, as long as you follow basic safety rules:

  • Always follow the rangers’ instructions near Komodo dragons – they are wild and dangerous animals.
  • Choose reputable boats and dive centres (safety gear, oxygen, radios, etc.).
  • Be mindful of the rainy season (Jan–Feb can bring rougher seas).
  • Have appropriate travel & dive insurance.
When is the best time to visit Komodo?

For most travellers, the ideal balance is:

  • April–June: settled conditions, still-green landscapes, fewer crowds.
  • September–November: excellent for diving, great visibility and generally fewer visitors than July–August.
Should I arrive the day before or on the same day as my trip?

You really should arrive the day before. If your flight is delayed and you are scheduled to go to the park that same morning, you risk missing your boat. One night in Labuan Bajo lets you:

  • Check in at the dive centre.
  • Prepare your dive gear.
  • Recover from your journey.
What’s the best way to combine Komodo & diving?

You’ve got two main options:

  • Daily diving from Labuan Bajo (great if you have 2–5 days here).
  • Liveaboard cruises like our Shenron Liveaboard, to reach more remote sites and sleep in the heart of the park.
