Fun Facts

  • Fingerprints: Each manta has a unique pattern of spots on its belly, used by scientists for identification.
  • Movement: If they stop swimming, they sink! They must keep moving to breathe.
  • Jumping: They breach out of the water! Scientists think this might be to remove parasites or as a courtship ritual.

Conservation Status 🌏

The manta ray population is declining globally due to overfishing and pollution. Both Reef and Giant Mantas are classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Good News in Indonesia: In 2014, the Indonesian government banned fishing and exporting manta rays, creating one of the world's largest sanctuaries. Komodo National Park is a safe haven for them.

Our Policy: Dragon Dive Komodo strictly follows the code of conduct. Do not touch, chase, or ride the mantas. Passive interaction yields the best encounters!

It is a courtship ritual where a female is followed by a line of males (sometimes up to 20!) mimicking her every move. It is a spectacular sight often seen during the wet season (Dec-Feb).

Not necessarily. Mawan and Manta Point can be dived by Open Water divers if currents are mild. However, sites like The Cauldron or Manta Alley require more experience due to stronger currents.
