The Experience

The dive typically starts on a sandy slope protected from the current. As you fin towards the "bowl" (The Cauldron), you can observe huge schools of snappers and sweetlips. Once you hit the lip of the cauldron, the current picks up, shooting you through the channel known as the "Shotgun."

Who is it for?

This is an intermediate to advanced dive. Divers should be comfortable with:

  • Negative entries (sometimes required).
  • Drifting in strong currents.
  • Reef hook deployment (occasionally needed).

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, no. Due to the potential for strong currents and the fast drift of the Shotgun, we recommend divers have Advanced certification or significant drift diving experience.

Our guides are the only ones authorized to carry a reef hook in North Komodo. While you drift through the Shotgun, they can hook in before or after the main channel to let you enjoy the shark action without wasting energy.

At Dragon Dive Komodo, we are not big fans of reef hooks and believe that the rocks are accessible and safe enough to hold onto with your hands when needed. Reef hooks are generally forbidden in most National Parks and should only be used by trained and certified dive guides.

Yes! Our daily boats can reach North Komodo from Labuan Bajo in about 70-90 minutes, making it accessible for daily diving trips as well as liveaboards.
